Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Upper back tweaked last night!  Back felt better when I woke up, but had PT appt this morning so that was good.  They did ultrasound and massage on three areas:  that knotty back area, SI, and upper ham.

Afterward ran 5.22 in 40, 7:40something pace.

Met Tyler and Travis at the Salem track.  MacK's son got the flu so she had the joy of dealing with that instead of running with friends.  Sorry McKenzie (see, I know how to spell your name).

Workout was 4-5 1000m cruise intervals, just 200m rest in between.  3:45-3:50.

Did 2.7 miles warm up, changed into red racers and stretched, potty break.  I knew Travis would take off but I informed the guys I had to stick to pace, this isn't a "give it all you got" type of workout.  Travis took the lead on each one and was 9-13 sec faster than Tyler and I, who stuck together (Tyler just ran Boston with his wife KellieS eight days ago, or else he would have been more itchy).

1 - 3:44 (1:06 rest), 2- 3:44 (1:28 rest - I had to tie my shoe), 3-3:41, oops a little too fast (1:14), 4 - 3:43 (1:12), 5 - 3:42 (actually Tyler didn't stick with me on this one, he took off on the last lap, probably 5 sec ahead by the end),  workout was nice and short, I could have done a couple more at least without trouble, but the short rest does start to get to you.

Nice long cool down.

Travis was so nice.  He says he doesn't even consider me a girl, I run so fast.  What a complement.  I will try to live up to it.

Slept in.  Ran from the Provo Mall along the 1/2 marathon course.  It was kind of cold, but not quite to glove weather.  Warmed up just over 4 miles, then ran 8x 1 min on/off.  Averaged 5:38 for the "on" portions.  It would snow lightly on and off.  I hope Saturday's weather is calm.  I want my time to reflect my abilities.

Well, I would be thrilled to have gotten this time if I had gotten 1st place.  As it is, I got second, so it's more like satisfied and hungry for more.

It was dry when we started, but starting raining soon after we started, rain, hail, snow, and I am sure there was some clear parts (perhaps 30% clear?)

The McMillan calculator for my past two races indicated 1:24:17, but its easier to pull off a good 5k or 10k than a 1/2, I've been concerned about my endurance.  Goal pace was 6:26.

1 - 6:02 start off in fourth place, taking it easy, Ted Lebow gave me my 1/4 mile split at 6:40 pace, so I picked it up a bit.  Travis was pacing me, and was a bit ahead.  By the first mile mark MaryAnn is ahead by about 5 seconds.

2 - 6:23, more on target, MaryAnn now ahead about 10 sec, I decide to let her go if she's not going my pace, I figure I'll reel her in later.  She ran a great race last weekend, but it was a 1/2 and I figured that would leave her vulnerable due to lack of recovery

3 - 6:18

4 -  6:23

5 - 6:15

6 - 6:18

7 - 6:17

8 - missed the mile marker

9 - 2 miles in 12:44, MaryAnn is about 20 seconds ahead, I pick off one guy between me and her

10 - 6:22, it feels like I am slowing down quite a bit, the river trail is a choppier experience than the road

11 - 6:29, first mile off pace, starting to feel the race, I've needed to go to the bathroom since mile 9, trying to surge to catch MaryAnn, but she's not getting closer, Travis is harrassing me in all the best ways a pacer should

12 - 6:34, "show me the way to go home"  I wish I had been stronger in this mile, if I had cut the gap in half I could have been in striking distance. grr.

Last 1.1 in 6:52, what pace is that? Ok, it's a 6:15 pace, I saw the clock with 10 seconds to 1:23 but couldn't quite get there in time.

So, a good re-debut into the the 1/2 marathon world.  I faded but not as bad as I could have.  I am happy to be a minute lower than the prediction, even with the weather.  1/2 marathons hurt.  This race put my stomach in a post-race funk, I still feel out of sorts.

Thank you to Luz for the screams, the hot chocolate, the umbrella, and the blanket.  Thanks to Smiths, Marriott and Costco for sponsoring my bathroom facilities, and a big thanks to Travis for pacing me so well.  He's in great shape, he could have gone perhaps 3-5 minutes faster without sticking with me.  Run13 puts on a good race.  Started on time, was very organized, the awards ceremony, while not glitch-free, was not of the painful variety.

I am not sure if I should be eating right now.  Perhaps I'll eat an orange.
