Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Ran 8.5 thru Payson with Ali.  Right calf still has a nasty knot in it.  Does icing or ibuprofen help knots?

Good luck tomorrow, go get that 1:22 time! Yeah, ice and Ibuprofen can help, but also try to rub it out.

From James W on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 11:20:19

Dunno about ibuprofen, but my vote is for scraping and deep massage . . . maybe just after icing so it is numb ;)

From Robert on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 11:39:30

When a calf barks I ice it for 15-20 min. every 1-2 hours after running. Be careful engaging direct massage or rolling after the injury or work around the hot spot. I found direct rubbing prolonged the issue. Easy stretching throughout the day is ok as well, but if it starts burning then let it be. If it gets really testy then run on the mill and focus on picking up the feet after the stance phase. This does wonders for me. Rememer, the mill is our friend.

I vote for pretty aggressive rubbing/rolling of calf knots. I've only recently started getting them (maybe I'm finally getting some decent calf muscles!) and the $20 roller I got in May works wonders on them. It can hurt rubbing them aggressively but it seems to work best at eliminating them for me.

As a general rule, I try to stay away from ibuprofen....anything that hides the pain has a tendency to make me run through things I shouldn't.

I don't think ice or IB will help get a knot out. They will help get the inflamation down but massage or scraping is the only way, and some good stretching (but only if you have been doing it regularly, which I now you have).

If you don't have a scraping tool- the edge of my tv remote works. Dr Brady really likes to beat the crud out of calves :) Oh wait- you know that already :D But like Robert said- some rubbing does seem to prolong the issue. I don't know the difference between the good and bad kinds :( KNots are very different from tares though. KNots seem to react better to a gentle beating :) Sorry, I'm no help- eat some jam and go see Josse :D

Good luck tomorrow!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I weaseled my way into Josse's afternoon and she worked on my calf. It still hurts but I am sure it's going to get better faster because of her skilled hands.

Hey and I just made lasagna (my favorite food). I hardly ever make it, but going to be eating well tonight!

From marion on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 19:06:44

What time is dinner? Did you make enough for 8 guests? Post your recipe...pretty please :D

From Dale on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 19:08:12

Yup, isn't the rule that you have to have enough for everyone? I'm already getting hungry....

From MichelleL on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 19:46:56

If my kids are lucky I'll let them have some, but that's about the extent of my generosity.

And, sadly, I used the recipe on the back of the lasagna noodle box with some Michelle-tweaks, so no amazing recipe to share.

Good luck at Spanish Fork today. I'm sure you're going to do GREAT!!!!!!!
