Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Got great sleep last night. The night before I got bad sleep and so yesterday I felt bad all day. Headachy at times, sore throat at times. I slept today until I woke up naturally, a luxury I won't get again until next marathon taper in October (except I plan on doing this tomorrow morning too).

Today I feel great! What a difference getting enough sleep makes. I ran a little bit in a new running skirt I bought yesterday, but I asked a pedestrian if it was flipping up in back so she could see my bloomers and she said yes, so I stopped running and am returning that $60 skirt. Also I had three gu's in the side pocket and it bounced too much. It was ok with two gu's but the bloomer-flash makes the skirt a no-go. So I went home after less than a mile, changed to the race shorts I got from the St. George Running Center, and to my delight the small pocket actually fits three gu's if you cram them in, plus it doesn't bounce. So I am wearing the shorts I am supposed to wear. Go figure.

I ran the rest of my run at the park by my home, doing striders on the downhill part of the loop. It was 10am-11am and mid 60's so that is pretty similar to how the middle of the race will feel.

time to carbo load baby! I am focusing on my grains at this point. Going on a date with Paul tonight since the weekend is packed and we missed our date last weekend because my babysitter went up to see David Archeletta in Murray, forgetting all about her commitment to me. Where are her priorities ? : )

Do not overdo on carbo-loading.

I think it is important to be loaded to a healthy level (not start the race depleted), but there is a point after which you can load more but it gives you no advantage, and could possibly hurt you by upsetting your stomach. Just eat healthy meals to satiation and you should be OK.

Although we read in all exercise physiology books that you lose all of your muscle glycogen after 90 minutes, somehow Demetrio Cabanillas managed to run 2:16 on the old DesNews course taking nothing but water, and Mike Kirk managed to run 2:29 in Ogden in 2006 taking nothing but water again. Not sure if Demetrio was losing it towards the end, but I know Mike was not. I ran 2:27 in TOU in 2003 taking in a small sip of the mix of soymilk, oats and bananas at 10 and at 16. I was slowing down, but not any more than normal, and my start was dream-aggressive (1:10:31 first half). Michael Wardian somehow manages to run a marathon within 5 minutes of what he could fresh the day after running an all out marathon. What those experiences tell me is that while carbs are important in a marathon, there is a lot more to the story than we know.

What I have observed is that it is what we feed our bodies the months before a marathon that make the biggest differance. And you just continue with that diet the week before the marathon. I agree with Sasha don't over do it on the carbs, it will leave you feeling heavy.

Very excited! It makes it so much more fun to have friends around me who I can pace with. It should be a great experience. Hey by the way, are you going to bring your FRB jacket at the start? Cal asked if we would be wearing them and I think its a great suggestion to wear them before the race to make it easier to spot us. So I'll be donning mine :)

I agree w/Sasha on carb loading. It can backfire(literally) I usually stick to my normal diet only adding an extra Cliff bar the day before and in the middle of the night before the race(3:30-4am) Tapering causes an excess of carbs in your system without "loading". I think also that dehydration is a more likely cause of slowing. I took a look at the Ogden course, it looks incredibly beautiful and if it weren't for the lack of oxygen, it would be a wicked fast course!

Katie - Ogden is not as fast as it looks, and high elevation may have something to do with it. You hit some rollers for about 8 miles in the middle at 5000 feet, they do not look too bad, but at that elevation and in the middle of a marathon they become a party spoiler if you are gunning for a fast time. They become even more of a spoiler if you do not treat them with proper respect.
