Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Pain in bed still when rotating, or if I trip in my crutches like a clutz, and a 1 otherwise.  Pain up to a 2 by evening, forgot to use crutches twice when getting up from couch, and leg felt fine both times.

Steve O sent me three articles about sacral stress fractures and they were like reading diary.  These injuries are so rare that misdiagnosis and false starts with treatment are inevitable.  If only it could have been diagnosed in Feb, but it wasn't because of faulty medical care, rather a lack of medical clairevoyance, and I'll have to forgive my various caregivers and most of all myself for that shortcoming :)

The articles suggest I could be on land running in 4-8 weeks, so I will likely be doing the 8 week plan.  Even though I have a "stress reaction" by diagnosis, I am going to treat it like a stress fracture, because it very well could be and just wasn't picked up strong enough (too many layers of fat to image through ;) ). 

Found out in articles amenorrhea was a potential cause of bone density loss. I just thought it was one of the many perks of being a serious runner :)  My last two were 4.67 months apart, so perhaps this is a risk for me.  I need to figure out calcium supplements and how to test for bone density/bone loss.

One week of no activity, then slow increase of cross training sounds like the plan.  I haven't done any cross training since Thursday, but I had extreme pain through last Saturday, and even Sunday wasn't that good, so should I wait until next Monday to start crosstraining?  My start will be walking in the pool and swimming with my arms.  All needs to be pain free.  So I could try it Friday and just see if its pain free.

Used new home e-stim unit, 2.5 hours on SI, 1 hr on back.  It's not as sturdy as the models at Dr. Bradys, or Steve O's offices, so I hope I don't wear the sucker out.

wow. The good news is that there IS a diagnosis and a treatment plan, and better yet, you WILL get better.

the other good news is that I am positive the only "fat" you "may" have is brown fat (the good kind). Don't think about the weight - you will lose it within a month or two when you get back to running. Just like mileage build-up it is easier once you have done it before ;-). I am going to get Sam's (Deans son) bike worked on tonight so I can start riding this weekend! Do they think that the cycling you did hurt you even more?

I am sure it set me back, but it couldn't have caused it, I just didn't bike enough. And I had the symptoms in January before I had done any biking.

Steve says I will be biking as part of my cross training regimen. I won't start with the biking though. It will come later.

I would suggest more time off from cross-training. Not sure if you know about pool running floats. I use dumbbell floats in my hands in the deep end. They keep me from sinking. No pressure at all on the feet, but you can work the quads and hamstrings. Also the arms. Can do various exercises. See: http://www.shapeupshop.com/aqua/hand_buoys.htm

It is boring as all get out, but I rig a radio or MP3 on my goggle strap on my head and it helps pass the time. The head is always above water. It provides a good workout once you can move the legs without pain.

I would err on the side of caution and not do any cross-training until next week at the earliest. After all you have been through this year, I would think now is the time to be a little more cautious hoping for a final healing.

Regarding the lack of a menstrual cycle - yes, that can definitely have a side effect of calcium depletion. There are lots of good calcium options to take and you will need to take them for the rest of your life (unless you decide to not stay active or ever get older). I take calcium supplements daily because of a stress fracture many years ago and it was recommended by my doctor.

I know there are several methods of verifying bone density/osteoporosis and I would think that a lot of them might be covered because of this year's medical history.

To rule out osteoporosis or osteopena, have your doctor order the Dexa-scan. It scans your spine and hip, very simple and quick. Gives you a number to know where your bone density is at. I have osteoporosis and menopausal. Calcium supplements is just one of the ways to slow bone loss.

I agree with taking the cautious way for Xtraining.

Forget about your weight and just take it easy! Your main goal here is to get healthy. I had a stress fracture and I tried to come back to early and ended up losing more time and re-injuring so please, please, just take it easy! Use the time to regroup and reflect on things and enjoy your family... I wish I would have listen to a very good friend when I was given that same advise, I would have been better off in the long run;-)

I take a really good liquid calcium, I have tried alot and think this is he best. It helped Ericka get over a stress fracture pretty quick. Let me know if you want to try it, I think it is about 40 bucks a bottle.

Ok, I'll err on the side of caution. My right foot is getting somewhat swollen and pink from being treated gingerly. I am going to start moving the foot while seated to try to stimulate some circulation, help it feel less left out.

Josse-can you give me that supplement name? I don't know that I want to permanently commit to such an expense, but I'll take an expensive form now for my healing time and while I wait to get my bones tested and have the bone density discussion with my dr.

I get the stuff from my mom and it is not commitment. I only take it when I feel like I am having problems. I should take it regularly but it is expensive and I drink a lot of milk. It is called Youngevity/Majestic earth Ultimate Osteo-fx. There website is www.youngevity.com It is a sign up thing but that is why I just get it from my mom so I don't have to commit to anything. It is totally up to you, but I think the stuff is liquid gold. I notice a huge difference when I take it. I sleep like a baby.

Most calcium supplements give me stomach cramps. But ... I really like the Calcium gummie bears they sell at Costco. $10 bucks for a giant bottle. I usually eat 4 of them a day ... plus they are so so so yummy. They have Vitamin D as well which is a must.

Did they ever check your calcium and vitamin d levels in a blood test? Also, I know one of the docs I saw was really worried about Female Triad Syndrome with me. I don't have it, but I'm glad I looked into it. It definitely made me think about some things.

I think I'll keep eating tums and drinking milk until my dr appt next tuesday (each tum - 320mg calcium). All this stuff is making my head spin. I didn't know doctors can check for calcium levels in your bones.

Teena - are the gummi bears just calcium and vit D or are they general vitamin supplements?

Oh Michelle your body hardly absorbs the calcium in tums, and if you are eating sugar your body won't absorb very well either. Pop does the same thing, but as I remember you gave up that stuff?
