Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Planned on running 4 then a bike ride.  Ericka and Josse joined in SF.  We ran with the SF group.  Josse and Ericka turned around at 1.5 miles, but I wanted 4 and they had to replace Erika's flat tire, so I kept running with Merri, then with MacK and Merri.  Then I was on my own and wandered through a neighborhood, stopped at a laundromat for their toilet, then met up with Josse and Ericka.  Ericka's tire was being a pill and they broke a tool trying to replace it, so she hung out in the car while Josse and I biked, which is so dull and I am so sorry Ericka!

I was riding the Pachev's 10 year old mountain bike and Josse's got her expensive, nice road bike, so you know who was struggling during the ride. Crotch way sore.  Several times I asked Josse, "Is my back tire flat?  It feels flat."  And she's like, "It's fine"  Later:  "Is my back tire flat now?" "It's still fine."  I am such a wuss.  Legs were way tired by the end.  I can tell I am getting out of shape.  I am turning into a marshmallow.  Hopefully things are turning around again.

I don't have pace for any of it. 

I mapped both on the course tool and my run was 4.75 (oops), and the bike ride was 15 miles, I'll count 3 bike miles = 1 running mile, though I think I should get a 2:1 ratio for that bike (I appreciate the Pachev's letting me borrow it, and its way better than what I have which is a big fat nothing, but it is not the most efficient machine).

Afternoon - rode another three miles or so with my son (he rode about 2, I kept going ahead and circling back for him).  The hills in WH are killer (example, we had to walk up a 15% grade Loafer Road segment).  We vowed to do it again next week and get better at conquering the hills. I'll count as a mile.  Nice to get my metabolism up a little in the afternoon. Some stretching this evening, but felt a sharp pain in my problem glute (radiated down leg). That wasn't good.  After that stretching hurt so I stopped. Bogus.  Going to watch a Cary Grant movie I don't think I have seen yet (His Girl Friday).  He is so dreamy.  I bet it will turn out that I have seen it, but we'll see.

I told you you'd get a workout on that bike :-) For the record, it is older than 10 years. We bought it used in 1997.

In the way of bragging - I've done my 10.1 course on that bike in 37:12 when recovering from DesNews last year. That is 16.29 mph average. I had to slow down in a few places to make turns and get around pedestrians. Unobstructed I was riding about 18 mph. I have no clue what I can do on a nice race bike, and I do not want to know that bad - for myself I'll never buy one, and I'd be scared to borrow and ride something that is worth $3K. However, Ted told me several times I should just become a cyclist.

Michelle, I am sure you are not a marshmellow yet ... you are too fit for a little couple weeks to get you down.

How long did it take you to ride 15 miles? Dean told me (dean this dean that ... how immature is that?) that he would covert from time to miles (e.g., the same way I get my mileage, I run 72 mins I estimate 9 min/mile and say I ran 7 miles -- so if it takes you 40 mins then for you guys it would be about 5 miles).

Anyway -- I think it sounds like a nice way to spend a morning, I wish I could have joined you (although you would probably kick my behind in that too!).

I think it was 60 minutes, though we didn't track. That would make it about 7 miles, but does it really matter if it's not running miles? It was cool to be out so long working out. That's all I know.

Oh, man, I have been out of town for a while and I have not checked your blog. What a bummer, but you are hanging in there strong. AND there is no way you are turning into a marshmallow!

Hey, I took almost 6 months off running, gained 13 pounds, and came back with an PR by 8 minutes. So, maybe the break will make you faster and stronger, you just never know!
