Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Man, I can't find one of my windbreaker shell on my mittens, and it was cold this morning (9F in riverbottoms).  Combine the two and I just about lost a couple of digits.  Met up with the SF group, started off with MacK and Ali, then Travis met up with us, MacK wanted to start the tempo early, which as a consequence made the whole tempo uphill - what a treat.  The plan was 4 mile tempo at marathon pace effort.  It was hard to keep pace, partially probably because of the temperatures, partly because of the headwind for 3.3 of the miles.

1 - 6:51, hmmm, MacK with me for .7, Travis stays with

2 - 6:29, better, bottom lip freezing

3 - 6:32, headwind stregthening, but not as bad as sometimes

4 - 6:36, includes worst uphill section at the end.

Travis was with me the whole time and pushed pace.  I tried to keep it at marathon effort, which gave me poor splits, but did I mention it was 9F?  We turned around and picked up MacK, who wasn't far behind.

I tried some Cytomax during the run, which is the drink the marathon provides.  It tasted like Crystal Light, and had only 1/2 the calories of Gatorade.  My stomach accepted it just fine.

Finished 13 miles in a whiny mood (sorry MacK and Travis) because my fingers were really freezing).  I could hardly untie my shoe to get my car key when I was done.  I kept having to pick at the double knot with my frozen stubs.  Finally success and I am the car.

Endurox, then I took a way long hot shower and now am in sweats with a hoody.

Good job, running in the cold is sooo tough. I would have whined too :) What marathon are you getting ready for?

From MichelleL on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:31:28

Thanks Kelsey. I am racing the PF Chang Phoenix Rock N Roll marathon next Sunday. It's coming up~!

From walter on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:41:07

Sounds like you had a little colder conditions than me. It was about 19 degrees on the Jordan river parktrail for me. Sounds like you had a good workout. I promise Ill get with you guys soon. Hopefully in much warmer conditions.

From Bonnie on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:59:00

Great job Michelle ... sorry about the digits ... hands being cold is the worst! You might need some cheap gloves for next weekend, it is chilly in the AM lately. You are going to ROCK with the nice warm temps here!

From Jon on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 13:37:38

You are the car?

From Clay on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 14:23:18

It was 9 degrees this morning? I thought there was reason why my beard froze up this morning!!!

I agree you are going to rock that race next weekend, I can't wait to see how you do!

From kelsey on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 15:21:11

That's awesome, good luck!!! I am sure you are all set. I took some time off running and wasn't on here for a while so I took some time this morning to look through your work outs. You have had some great ones leading up to this marathon and I am sure they will pay off! I was really impressed by the 3x5k, I think I will try that workout when I start training for my next one. If that doesn't make you strong I don't know what will!

Jon - Cars are fast, its positive mental visualization, yeah, . . . or a lack of proofreading (how exciting a comment from Jon, oh, wait, its just him poking fun)

Kelsey - next round of training I'm planning on doing 2x10k too, all about baby steps. Baby steps toward excellence :)

From kellies on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 16:20:59

Ooooh, your marathon is coming really fast, Holy Cow, how did that happen. You are ready though. Good job getting out in the cold. That first mile (waiting for your face to freeze over and go numb) is painful! You are driving to Phoenix right? Is your family going with you?

From Marion on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 18:27:14

How early are you going down to AZ? That is going to feel SO good! I am so excited for you!

Your work outs are amazing. It is SO cold.

From MichelleL on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 19:21:59

KellieS- I am going alone, no family, no friends. I can't drive because it cuts into my time away from kids (makes the trip harder on Paul), it doesn't make sense financially (I lose work time because of drive time), and my hams specifically and whole body generally would get banged up from that long of a drive before the race.

Marion - I am going Friday afternoon. Have absolutely nothing to do Saturday yet (other than pick up my packet), which means I'll hit AZ mills and go see a chick flick?

From Marion on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 19:24:42

Movies! They are my favorite thing! I can't wait to read your race report :)

From Merri on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 21:29:29

Good luck at Rock n Run!!! The weather in AZ will be much better! Yeah I am too afraid of the cold...I am a slight wimp. :-)

From TylerS on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 23:11:46

Great job today, I passed you guys right before the 4 mile mark of the speedy. I said hi but not really any response from you guys. It was still dark and really cold. I was running with Shawn Wright, he didn't want to run with any new people today? When are you planning on the 2x10k? I would like to try and redeem myself. I think that the Payson 10k would be a great course to do that.??? Good job.

From MichelleL on Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 00:26:29

I saw you and said hi, but you must have not heard me, and you know how loquacious I am during a tempo. I figured you had my running schedule so would join us if you wanted to. We were wondering who the other fellow was who was with you. It was too dark to tell, but we did rule out SteveK and Pat.

From TylerS on Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 10:44:36

I was with Shawn Wright, he lives in Salem. His house is the 2nd house just north of the Loafer Elem. He ran St. George 2 years ago in 2:45:?? He got injured last spring and was not able to run it last year. He called and asked if I would run with him on Saturday. E-Mail me your running plans for the week.
