Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Ran 30 minutes in the morning, gradually settling into 8:00 pace.

3 pull ups at my son's kindergarten playground.  This is the most I have ever been able to do in my life, and I typically can't do it unless I am in primo shape.  So I was ecstatic to be able to do three today, it must be a good omen.  My goal is to be able to do 5.  This is the real way with knuckles away from your body.

30 min elliptical in afternoon (I will go do it shortly).

Spent hours emailing to and from coach and poring over fall marathons the last couple of days.  I think I will be doing the ING Hartford Marathon Oct 9th.  This will give me time to recover before the January half marathon, and we'll also target Boston 2011.  Lots of training ahead.  I am focused though.  I have a long term plan and need to be healthy.

Yea!! Goals are awesome ... sounds like good times! Which half in January?

From MichelleL on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 18:57:26 from 67.41.226.109

Houston, so the 1/2 marathon championships. I'll have to get better to be able to even qualify and not be the last one to finish :D

From Bonnie on Fri, May 07, 2010 at 19:09:46 from 128.196.228.134

So cool, Houston is on my short list for the marathon next year!

Michelle that is SO exciting! you inspire me, , , you have grand goals and I know if anyone has the determination, focus, and drive to achieve them it's you! . . . Plus, , , you can flippin' do 3 pull-ups! That just shows how tough you are :)- I don't think I can even do 1!, , , I just looked up the ING marathon home page and looks like you could take first!!! SO great! Good luck, it's so nice to have your long-term plans in the works!

I hate to break it to you sweetie, but you can do those pull ups because you weigh 87 pounds right now :) Even so...I don't know I could do one. Be healthy. Boston awaits!

I like your plan. I am so excited for you to run Boston next year!

From Paul on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 09:02:55 from 174.27.230.30

Sounds like a cool race schedule. I had forgotten about the Hartford Marathon (did some mapping for them a while back, and noted how flat and fast the course looked). I'll have to put that one on my short list, if Chicago or Twin Cities don't work out. Prize money looks good there too.

From Smooth on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 10:22:27 from 174.23.172.155

So excited for your plans. You' re doing awesome!

From MichelleL on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 10:39:19 from 67.41.226.109

Paul-I think the prize money has been reworked this year because this is a new ING sponsorship, so I would guess competition will follow the prize money so I'll likely be just out of reach. I loved your comment about the true elite compared to "whatever the heck I am". That's pretty much how I'll feel, I am guessing, when I travel for these races.

From Paul on Mon, May 10, 2010 at 11:38:58 from 174.27.230.30

ING has been a sponsor for a few years at least. Yes, I think it's good to travel to races to get humiliated once in a while. Prevents getting a big head.

I noted a while back that Hartford looks enticing to me too. I have not talked to anyone who has done it so I'll be excited to hear how it goes for you. My Coach has done Baltimore and thinks I can do well there plus I have a good friend who I haven't seen in forever who lives there, so its Baltimore for me this fall.

From MichelleL on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 18:20:53 from 67.41.166.22

Baltimore was on my short list too.

Have you looked at Indianapolis Monumental? Saturday race, flat course, prize money 10 deep. Nov 6. It's only a few years old, so not as well-known. Good reputation for being well-organized, though.

From Nan on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 21:18:46 from 174.51.250.151

Paul, where did you find the prize money breakdown for Indianapolis?

From Paul on Fri, May 14, 2010 at 22:55:55 from 174.27.230.30

I emailed the race director.
