Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I can't stand sleeping on my right side any more!  Laying flat on my back causes a dull pain, and I can feel the SI when I shift legs in bed, or sleep on stomach too, but that's how I ended up.  I'll know I've won the battle with this thing when I can roll around in bed to my hearts content.

I feel like such a slug.  I have fallen out of love with food, feel semi-nauseous alot and undeserving of eating, since I so sedentary.  Eating none the less.  There's the female athlete triad that contributes to bone injuries:  1) disordered eating, 2) amenorrhea and 3) osteoporosis.  I have #2, perhaps #3 but not #1.  I don't always eat as well as I should, but I eat plenty (as demonstrated by my 10# weight gain so far) and try to eat right. 

No pain getting in or out of the car (I was keeping legs parallel like a granny, but still progress).

 My back got tired by the end of the day, but no steady tightening/pain like days past, so that is progress.

I read that e-stim can actually help the bone rebuild.  Has anyone else heard that?

Michelle - have you tried using pillows to prop yourself into a comfortable position and give your side a break. Maybe that will help.

Been there with the sleeping. It's tough.

For weight management, have you considered trying a "paleolithic" diet? Basically it's very simple: meat, eggs, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds. No bread, rice, grains, potatoes, corn, or legumes. No processed food. You eat as much as you want. It takes a little while to get used to, but I guarantee that you will lose weight and keep it off, even when inactive.

My weight used to bounce around by as much as 20 lbs during periods of no running, but with my current diet it doesn't fluctuate at all. I feel very healthy on it, energy is good, and running performance is good too, perhaps even better than before, given the low mileage I do now.

I had the trouble sleeping too for about a month when my injury was at it's peak. Turning over in bed would wake me up and then there was just no way to be comfortable after that. I am so sorry, and sounds like you'll be struggeling with depression too (not wanting to eat/lifeless) probably made worse by not sleeping well. Food doesn't taste the same when you're not burning 10,000 calories a day.....just take it one day at a time and try to keep your head above the water. After a few weeks you'll be stronger and you'll be able to feel it. I hate reading how this is for you, but I know you'll get over it. I don't know about stress fracture, but like all stuff that hurts....It just takes so much $%#@$^%$# time to get better. When my kids say "but this is boring! I hate this..." I always say, "that's because you're learning patience. It's the most painful thing in the world to learn." I'm with you in mind and spirit. If it makes feel any better, the 10 pounds may clear up that darn amenorrhea (isn't that just what you wanted?!)
