Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Slept over at my sister's house in Ogden, so I was able to wake up at a reasonable time: 5:45.  Got to the buses at 6:50, it was wierd how the race directors had all the buses fill up, then they all went up the course at the same time, so that cut into my warm up time. Had a scant half hour til start time.  Ran up the road to get some privacy, saw Paul Petersen, good to see him here.  See Sariah and Stephanie, good, have some competition.

My plan was 6:15 for mile 1, 6:00 from miles 2-7, then 6:15ish to the end.  Even if I faded I would hit the 1:21-1:22 McMillan thought I could do. I also didn't want to lead early.

Mile 1-3 were 6:02, 6:04, 6:08, I was in a pack of three girls and three boys, hanging in back.  I was surprised to have some head wind, but stayed tucked behind so as to not get the brunt of it. I felt good in the first couple of miles, with the exception of some leg pains (just worrisome, not affecting running), but started to feel uncomfortable and started slowing already by mile 4, fell back from the pack.  Miles 4-6 were 6:19, 6:22, 6:30 and these still were downhill miles!  I was already reeling mentally from this, but felt like I should try to keep in the 6:30's for the rest of the race, if I did, I might catch white shirt who was slowing but way ahead of me (at first I thought it might be Sariah) (let's see how that went, shall we?).  The remainder of the miles were 6:42, 6:37, 7:01, 6:46, 6:57, 6:56, 6:47, and 40 seconds for .12 (5:38 pace).  Rolling in at 1:25:5x.  You know how you put your foot up on a stool so they can cut off your chip?  Well, my foot was totally shaking, a sign of a race run hard, but the results were so unsatisfactory.  A 7:01 for mile 9?  So anyway.  I grab my coat and want to cool down.  Sariah's husband, who was so kind to cheer me all along the way, that was really kind of him to do, asked how it went, and I gave some unhappy response.  Then another guy asks how it went, then he says he's from the blog and I just start bawling.  I guess it was just because the blog has been my support through the good, bad and the ugly, so I knew I was facing someone who knew my goal and knew how far away from it I am (or was for the day anyway).  Sorry for the scene, Mark.

I ran off still visibly upset but was able to calm down within a quarter mile.  Had a stoic remainder of a cool down.  Had a good chat with Paul who said my series of goose eggs were good for me :D  I sat with Sariah and Stephanie (both of which had good races and got the time range I should have been in) and talked with them.  Doing a series of races with competitors builds a sense of comraderie.

On the way home I listened to conference.  There was a good talk about pain and how it makes you humble and turn to the Lord and in the end stronger.  I hope that holds true.

I am not sure if this is just a funk or if something is wrong in my body.  It turns out I ran 77 miles this week, on top of 79 last week, and a Yasso workout on Thursday, so maybe I am just tired (I would think this wouldn't cause such a big swing, but maybe).  Maybe I am in a psychological funk.  Or maybe I really am internally bleeding (as my last blood test indicated).  I think I am going to try to make my next gastro appt be earlier (it is set for April 18th).  ***Note, don't freak out about these lab results, I've had a lot of weirdish lab/medical stuff that aren't critical that we are watching, that's my point.  If I was internally bleeding in any significant way we'd know from my p**p; all I mean to say is that I should check on it again sooner rather than later, like some have said, just for peace of mind.

We saw True Grit in the evening, a great movie.  Then did core workout.

I dont need to read your blog, you can ask any of the St. George running center runners how much they love that course in April! lol

From Kelli on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 12:17:20 from 71.219.97.85

Sorry that the results were not what you wanted Michelle. That is hard. But you are one of the toughest people I know, so, YES, that talk will hold true for you. (Who was it, BTW, I would like to read it?)

I am sure it is a funk and the high mileage and tough workouts before a race may have contributed as well. I am with you on getting in to the doctor early.

This blog is wonderful, but sometimes it makes us put way too much pressure on ourselves to perform. We can not be ON every day, and sometimes that off switch just happens to be flipped on a race day, right?

The GREAT thing about this blog is that everyone is a runner and we all GET IT. So you can show your sadness and disappointment and get support that way, too.

TAKE CARE!

It is obviously Sunday, I sound preachy! TAKE CARE!

Sorry to hear this race was tough. But congrats on taking third. I agree with Kelli, we have all had off days. Here's to brighter races ahead.

From Bonnie on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 12:51:38 from 64.119.33.134

Michelle, you trained through this race -- it is not surprising that you did not feel great. It was a good effort, you learned a lot from it - and can use it to your advantage as you continue to train for your key race. I sincerely hope that it is not an indication of something more serious (health-wise), so I will hope you felt your training. I will remind you, since you seem to forget, you only recently upped your training mileage and, as you know, it takes a while for it to feel "comfortable". Enjoy conference. peace.

Thanks for the honest report. I heard that talk too and thought it applied so well to running. Really hoping you get an all-clear from the doctor.

From Seth on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 13:11:38 from 75.169.133.61

Great job holdin on. I'd say that's a good time considering the hard workouts and high mileage. Keep at it!

From Clay on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 14:21:55 from 76.27.46.68

Michelle, I'm so sorry you had a crappy race you have been working so hard!!!! I really don't have any words of wisdom, other than in the big scheme of things this is one race and you have many good races ahead of you. I would get to the doctor alittle earlier if possible just to put your mind ease... Michelle, you will have better races in the future guaranteed! Hang in there kiddo, you are still an inspiration to us all and you are a class act so keep your chin up;)

From Becky1 on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 16:11:48 from 76.23.13.133

Hi Michelle, sorry the race didnt go as planned. I have run that course a few times, and its decieving. You would think its faster than it really is and there always is wind. I am new here so not up to speed but when you mentioned internal bleeding I got very scared for you. I hope its nothing serious. Best Wishes.

From Paul on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 16:38:56 from 24.10.141.104

Good seeing you, but sorry you didn't have the race you wanted. I think you'll turn the corner with training and racing pretty soon. Just stick with it, and let your coach guide you out of it.

From josse on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 17:17:52 from 75.220.201.241

a character building race. We all need them and we all have them. Hope things turn for you soon.

From ty on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 17:39:29 from 208.117.121.152

man i if i had trained that hard up to a race, i'd be wiped out too. I'd bet that's all it is! What is your major race coming up??

I hope everything is ok internally. keep us posted.

From Teena Marie on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 19:02:47 from 67.2.71.182

You are absolutely amazing! I have no doubt that you will do what you always do: figure this out and come out an even stronger runner!

From Superfly on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 19:46:07 from 74.211.21.81

I totally feel for you. What a frustrating lifestyle we put ourselves through. I've shared those exact same feeling during races too many times. You run solid workouts and once in a while a good race but then some races you can't even run what you produce in workouts. It sucks and makes it really hard to keep aspiring to higher goals. But... We do and so hopefully a good race is just around the corner. Hope your healthy and don't have anything seriously wrong. Keep it up!

From Holt on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 20:08:15 from 71.213.94.186

Michelle - sorry about the tough result. Nothing is more frustrating that just not having it be there after all the work and not knowing why. It has driven me to near retirement (if you would call it that) numerous times. You are awesome and will pull through even stronger.

From MCKENZIE on Sun, Apr 03, 2011 at 22:21:00 from 75.169.134.52

I know its kinda dumb to comment on this because I will be seeing you tmrw or the next but I really feel for you. I feel your frustration and know how hard you work. You have a lot going on right now that will have an effect on you physically and emotionally. You are AWESOME and I'm your biggest fan !

From JulieC on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 10:01:34 from 67.41.190.132

don't worry you will get that GOLDEN EGG!! training through without a taper and expecting SUPERB performances everytime is not reality. You are amazing to all of us and with a few days of pampering (SLEEP, massage and fueling foods, some nice runs) you will feel much better. I think we run in cycles and agree with Kelli that UNfortunately our off day can land on RACE day. Ummm you ran ooodles of Yassos two days before...with that muscle pain/worry at the early miles I bet it was the delayed muscle soreness (you know DMS ; D) that caught up with you as well. BELIEVE!!! YOU ARE SO THERE!!!

From MarkP on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 13:36:58 from 24.2.76.180

No problem. Bummer races suck. See you at the next one!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 13:45:11 from 192.168.1.1

Michelle:

There are some elements of concern to be aware of:

- surgery

- tax season

- hard training

Combined they can be a cocktail of deadly poison, and thus result in a decreased health, which in turns manifests itself in a sub-par performance.

It looks like you may need a couple of weeks of easy jogging combined with good sleep, then maybe a test effort or a race to evaluate what that did for you, and go from there.

From Lily on Mon, Apr 04, 2011 at 21:44:43 from 67.199.178.210

Hi Michelle. Ditto Kelli's comment and Sasha's comments. I think you should take a little break and get some extra rest. The body can't get back to healthy when it's constantly pushed. We all know what you are capable of :) ♥ don't fret.

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Apr 05, 2011 at 15:26:13 from 72.205.227.203

You're still amazing and inspiring. We've all been there--the disappointing race after amazing workouts. It happens. I hope it's not your health, that it is just good 'ol fatigue and an "off" day--easily remedied! You're a fighter--as reflected by your blog these last few years! Good things are coming!

From LuzyLew on Tue, Apr 05, 2011 at 18:50:53 from 208.187.197.42

I'm sorry your race didn't go like you wanted it to and I'll try not to freak out about internal bleeding. That's the last time I'll say something like that, because next time I'm going to freak out when I say the phrase "internal bleeding". I'm with Sasha. Think of how much experience he has...you know he's right. It's not even April 15th. or 18th or whatever date the IRS deadline is this year. You have been so focused, and working so hard. It will come back when you're feeling rested.

From Craig on Sun, Apr 10, 2011 at 21:25:45 from 174.52.30.221

I heard about the tough race from my training partner Mark (as mentioned in your race report). Your entry was inspiring to me in terms of mental toughness, and I'll try to remember a few points at the Salt Lake half next weekend. Way to hang in there. I do have to say that I'm surprised about your weekly mileage this time of the year (75+). I know you're dealing with more elite placement than I am, but I also know my races would suffer if I jumped up to that level. I don't know how much cross training you do, but it was just a casual observation. Sasha is probably right. Good to see you at the Lake to Lake relay.
