Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Ran .5 miles in the morning. Started the run with a pop in my left knee, then knee pain, I think behind the knee cap.  I stopped after .1, stretched really well, then ran some more, didn't go away.  So at .5, I turned around and walked to the car.  There is no time to mess around with 19 days till marathon.  Went to PT, they wanted more info on where the pain was, so I suggested me running on their tm, so I warmed up easy spin for 5 min, then 10 min easy on tm, no pain, just the knee weakness I have had for a month or two.  So they worked the knee and my right ham for good measure.

Did 10 min elliptical while jj did the cat litter this evening, and there was knee achiness, between the normal weakness and the morning pain.  I am praying for no pain on Tuesday.

Ice ice ice. My bet is the hamstring Michelle (that behind the knee pain is something I have had before - it hurt so bad that I was sure I had torn something -- I got some ART and it went away instantly). Roll on a ball, deep in the belly of the hamstring and down to near the back of your knee. Epsom salts bath, as hot as you can stand it for 20 mins then roll again.

Good luck Michelle, rest rest rest.

Don't worry Bonnie, I've been fine the rest of the week. I don't have time to post the rest of the week right now, but I'll do the hamstring thing. I don't know about the salts, I hate the sweating. Would it help at any time of the day (not just right after a workout?) Perhaps I could do it tonight, if I bring a book in the tub with me.

Jessica swears by just after your workouts, but I never have time to do it then and have always done mine in the evening before bed. I know, I hate the sweating too ... I just take a huge glass of ice water (I guess you need a plastic glass) and it helps a lot. After the bath I used the Aveda stuff I made you try - but any icy/hot or something like that would work. It really helps loosen you up ;-).

I forgot, I usually ice after workouts, and then do the hot bath at night.
