Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Met the SF group which was just Jill, Travis and I to start.  Travis and I scared away Jill with our pace within .75 miles, which was sad, but we went to Bishops and were rewarded with Hal and Steve's company.  We ran with them to junk mail and back, then met up with Kellie, Tyler and Kelli, and Travis and I joined them for a jaunt around the golf course and back to Bishops.  Then Travis and I finished up our 20 miler back to his house.   I wanted to do some tempo today, but the roads were icy and I got less excited about it as time went on, so I just told myself I'll do an excellent workout on Tuesday.  20 milers are by definition hard runs anyway, right, even if done at an easy pace?  Some one back me up on this ;)

I let each one in my family choose one Christmas treat for me to make, so here is the list:

Ben - popcorn balls

JJ - Danish cookies

Mickie - marshmallow fudge

Paul - Pecan toffee

Michelle - My signature pumpkin, chocolate chip, raisin bread

Time to go shopping!

20 miles is KILLER by definition and you are a totally off the hook for a temp today. I am trying really hard to make myself go out and do 11 ALONE! I am waning enthusiasm and dreading it! Can you hit the wall before you leave? The snow is beating up this California girls spirit. :(

From JulieC on Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 12:25:24

I am amazed you can even keep pace on these roads. The roads in Pleasant Grove are snowy, icy and mainly unplowed in any way, shape or form. Cedar Hills was riduclous. I am about to check my run with the course tool with my pace (10 miles is my guess) but WOW for you girl. You are definitely ELITE!!!!! Still got to put screws in my old shoes, do you do this?

From MichelleL on Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 13:23:13

Utah's still way better than CA, the snow is what'll make a sweet xmas. Not so great for running though.

Julie - I don't put in screws. I have heard of it, but I've gone 4 years without a real fall, so I don't think its worth the effort. Plus I have 7 shoes to cycle through. That's alot of screws.

20miles at 8:00 pace, yup, hard run.

Can I ask for pumpkin pie?

good job michelle on you run. i just finished my long run and it took it all out of me. I feel the main thing of a 20 is to be consistant. Teach your body to run for a long period of time at any effort and it learns to be more efficient with your fuel consumption. Also repeating the process week after week helps in this. Some weeks I feel better than others and so they are faster, but effort is my main goal. Have a great Holiday.

I just looked at your race schedule for the new year. I would add a race I'm starting that will also be the first USATF circuit race in 2009. It starts at the Zoo and ends at the East High track. It will be fast and have prize money. Running with the Leopards 5K, March 28. It is a perfect fast race to kick off your season. Just don't pass me I hate being chicked.

From MichelleL on Sat, Dec 20, 2008 at 18:39:46

End of March - its in tax season so I won't be racing. That race schedule was last years, so I need to update.
