Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I love mother's day!

I am making Paul make a turkey, you should have seen his face as he took the giblets and turkey neck out of its cavity.  He is so afraid of semonila and it just grossed him out.  He made a cake and frosting from scratch.  He's so domestic!!!

I got a big symphony bar and between the 5 of us (mostly me, but I shared) its gone!

My back massager I got as a gift is missing some pieces, so I need to take it back :(  Next year I am getting my own MRI machine :P  It'll be way useful for early detection of stress fractures.

I am still thinking to go to the pool Monday for walking in the pool and swimming with just my arms, but will keep it short.

I have no pain, but some slight soreness if I rotate on a bed, trip with my crutches (sorry this still happens) and otherwise can just feel a slight difference between the two sides, but perhaps thats just the muscle atrophy. (muscle atrophy being my favorite phrase right now).  My right side (unused side) is also slightly discolored (pink, sometimes purple) but I can get it the same color after flexing and relaxing the calve for a few minutes.

Happy Mother's Day, Michele. I'm glad the recovery is going well and your family is spoiling you.

Question for you - my right hamstring started aching a little last night (actually its a tossup between the hamstring and IT band) and still bothered me tonight when walking the dog. I was going to run M,T,W and then take off Th and F before the marathon - do you think I should just cross train for a day or two or maybe take another rest day off on Monday?

I'd hit the pool and see if you can't get it massaged by your favorite massage therapist Mon or Tue and see if it gets better in a day or two. If not I would skip the marathon. I have learned this the hard way. Marathons take a lot out of you so you want to make each one count.

Mac said you had a fracture?! I hope you recovery is going well.

You are my hero! Still going in any way possible. i am running Ogden on Saturday. I have some pretty severe shin splints though so we will see. What is your advice on running Ogden. Strategies?

Sue--

I'd say don't run it. I am on a kick of telling people to not run marathons if they are going into it with pain, might have something to do with my experience this spring.

If you do decide to run, I loved how I ran this race last year, with a negative split, and holding way back at first. It made it way enjoyable, especially with passing the ladies down the canyon. I'd read my Ogden race report from 2008 and Paul Petersen's from 2007.
