Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Could not stay asleep!  Woke up at 3am.  Got out of bed at 3:40 and got ready for work.

Went to a sports PT today.  Steve Orrock is a marathoner and a sports PT, and owns a sports therapy center.  Unfortunately he wasn't there this morning.  Karen, who worked on me, said the pain is not in the SI, but lower, closer to the tailbone, ligaments down there.  She had me do lots of different reaches, and said my weakness is in crossward motion, and had me do exercises where I am crossing my body, three types which I need to do three times a day.  She and her helper also did heat, asym, massage, ultrasound, and icing to finish up.  I am just as sore as yesterday.  Not really seeing progress.

Is it starting to frustrate you that every place you go has a different idea of what is wrong? Do you think anyone has diagnosed you correctly or do you think you have multiple weaknesses/injuries?

I can imagine how frustrating this would be for an average runner like me, but I would imagine it is even more frustrating for a gifted athlete like you to be struggling with this.

You would think it would, but I've been ok with it. The latest analysis of why makes sense to me and there's exercises to improve the weakness so that makes me hopeful.

It always helps to be able to DO something to help :) I am glad you are getting some good help :) I have heard good things about that place.

Michelle,

I can not even begin to tell you how much I relate to what you are saying. Although we have been given different diagnoses the pain and feelings seem so much alike. My PT said some similar stuff to me and has me doing different stretches and strength training. I just saw my 3rd doc yesterday (actually she was the doc's physician assistant). 3 docs, all with different ideas, suggestions, and diagnoses. Hoping that one of them will be able to help me. I am suppose to have an MRI and bone density test this week (things that you have already gone through). They also did blood work and urinalysis (worried about Female Athlete Triad syndrome). I just don't know what to think anymore. But I am so stinkin' tired of this and the weather outside today just made me want to run even more. It's torturous!!

Hoping that you will start feeling better so so so soon!

Thinking about you and sending you lots of positive vibes.
