Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

About 14 minutes of swimming with arms, scuba mask, and running belt around waist.  I look choice, especially when you add in the crutches while getting in the pool.  The good thing is people hardly ever ask to share the lane with me.  I look too odd.  500m total freestyle, first 400m in 10:07.  I was taking it pretty easy, but got heartrate up to 108 by the end.  This is the longest I have used the scuba gear while swimming.  My mouth got so dry from breathing into that pipe, noticable after 10 min.

Then 10 min of walking in the pool with water about 4" shy of shoulders.  My weak leg is weak.  Go figure.  No pain.  Right side just feels different everywhere, but noticably in the bum, not pain, just a feeling that its different.

Will do nothing tomorrow, see how body reacts to this, then will try to repeat Fri.  Steve wanted me to spin with no resistance Fri but I bowed out. Even without resistance I think the rotations are risky for my joint.  I'll give in and do it next week.  He is the PT after all.  I didn't even know what an SI joint was until Feb 2009.

Well, Michelle, you are an inspiration to others. I continue to try to recover from my far-less serious injury. It is killing me not to be able to run trails. You're helping me put things in prospective and all this shows that with patience recovery will come. I continue to hit the pool too, at times it feels like punishment due to boredom. I have recovered enough to run on roads and did run a BQ and PR at Ogden Saturday, but that isn't my thing. I long for the hills, now almost two months without a pain-free run on the trails. Best wished in your continued recovery. It will come. Fitness will be restored very fast, I'm sure of it.
