Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Walked 1 mile, left groin niggling. Stretched, walked another .5, then ran 3 miles, starting around 8:40, and going up .1 mph each .25 mile, so went from 8:40 to 7:30 pace.  Manageable hard toward the end, like marathon pace. .5 mile walking cool down. 5 miles total on treadmill.

Then hopped on elliptical for 30 minutes.  Hard parts were especially hard, perhaps because I had already pushed it on the treadmill?

21 mph planned this week.  Have a PT appt this morning.

How about some Monday morning inspiration for ya? Did you see how Paul did at TOU? He won with 2:23!!! I think he was diganosed with the same problem you are having and has risen from the ashes a phoenix!!! Sasha was very inspired and excited to try some of Paul's diet changes..struggle well...I believe you will come back stronger and better if you don't give up. :)

Is "niggling" a technical term?? lol

How did the PT visit go??

From Smooth on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 17:25:20 from 97.117.81.161

GOOD JOB Michelle! Such dedication! I have the same thought as Sarah's with Paul's OUTSTANDING performance at TOU. You will come back stronger and better than ever! Keep up the good work!

Sarah--of course I saw it, was watching as he kept saving his race report as he wrote it, but he didn't post until it was complete, I waited on pins and needles. Paul is so inspiring, not only because of his running before and after his medical issues, but he is also a great example of spiritual and temporal maturity. And, yeah, Paul was diagnosed with the same condition, but a year before me, and he also has more talent than me. I don't think I will be running a 2:45 (the approx equivalent to a 2:23?) with 55 mpw. I think he's being blessed :) Thanks for your encouragement, I am trying to struggle well, but am always needing help from my friends.

Marion - highly technical :D and my pt appt went really well, he worked my whole ham and it feels much less tight. I am ready for my 21 miles this week!!!

Smooth - Thanks! Don't expect a similar comeback, he is beating the odds, but it does give me hope. Every day I can run is a gift.

From marion on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 20:45:41 from 71.213.124.121

PS- DON'T discount your talent, Missy. Not only are you a talented runner, but you have a level of dedication that not many people have. Your type of drive is a rare and precious gift.

PPS- you are not allowed to refute my above statement ;D xoxoxoxoxo

I think we are all on the same wavelength cheering for you Michelle. Paul's story is a good story of hope and example for you. It proves that you can beat AS and it doesn't have to beat you.

21 is my lucky number. I think I'll try and do that many miles running this week too.

Marion - I have to work Friday, so my kids are going to daycare. Sorry!

:P to your comment re my supposed talent and dedication and my inability to refute.

Michelle,Josse, Marion, McKenzie and everyone else that live close to PG, Orem, Salem etc.... to St. George. Look up email address intermountainlive.org and click on 18 day challenge. Lori Hutchingson is running a marathon everyday for 18 days from Idaho/Utah border to Arizona border. She will be running the SGM as well (the 17th day of the challenge). She starts today at 9 am at the Purple Turtle in PG and will be running to Salem. She is on her 6th marathon (Day 6) raising awareness/money for amputees. Her good friend got a staph infection and lost both her legs and an arm. She used to run with Lori. Inspiring story. I plan on running with her for one to two miles before going to bed this am. I am currently at work. Pass this on to every runner. How amazing!!
