Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

AM: Ran 4 miles on the treadmill in 31:47.

weight has stabilized at 125 for now. I hoped to be down to 124 for the race Saturday, so if I dehydrate myself severely. . . I am totally just kidding!

Later AM: Ran loop from the Springville Walmart. Warmed up .75 then stretched, did .25 then started a marathon pace tempo, just to get a feel of running comfortable at a fast but not super fast pace.

Mile 1 - 6:58 gradual uphill, and have a side stitch, worked it out by .5 or so

Mile 2 - 6:55 a little steeper uphill then some downhill toward the end

Mile 3 - 6:47

Mile 4 - 6:45, overpass then gradual downhill, at the beginning of this mile I went on an overpass on 400S which had a metal pedestrian section, but it turned out to be rickety and bent in places and I was strategizing how I would grab onto metal as I fell if it broke under me, ran 7:30 for probably .1 in there while concerned about it.

Ave pace for whole run 7:11, 5.64 miles

Thanks for the greeting! And of course I remember meeting you at SGM last year. I hope you've been running well and injury free the past several months.

To answer your question: by academic bureaucrat I mean I work in the research compliance office (providing information, training, etc., for the review committees that assess the ethics of research with humans, animals, rDNA, etc.) at Cornell.

Good luck on your race this weekend!

Michelle, read you comments to Benn, on the thread for email. It is difficult to equate cross-training effort to equivalent miles ran. Given my running of almost 30 years with many different injuries, I have a pretty good measuring of what types of workouts will keep me in fairly good shape when returning to running. The recording of mile is just a "feel good" thing for me. If you want to run great, run great.

Stay Kool, again, good luck at Ogden,

Brent - the only reason I brought it up to Benn was that there was a discussion thread about the issue and I thought he would feel better if a good friend and cheerleader of his (ME!) brought it to his attention. I agree it's hard to convert but staying on the blog seems to be helpful for you guys who are coming back from injuries. Come back with a vengence, will ya? BTW did you get into St. George?

From Brent on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 15:55:35

Michelle, I always appreciate your comments. St.George, I am safely in, have ran it 15 times. I just hope to be running. Sylive has ran it 11 times. It is kind of funny, you talk to runners on the blog, it is always nice to meet them in person. We will likely cross paths at some race. Sylive is running the 1/2 at Ogden, I will be the photo person. I hope all bloggers wear the FRB singlets. I have a great sports digital camera.

Stay Kool, Benn has a great spirit, B of BS Rools out

Oh, please take a picture of me! I am so glad I will be able to meet you and Sylvie on Saturday. I will be wearing my singlet and I will be one looking like she is really in pain!

From josse on Tue, May 13, 2008 at 18:23:03

I am sure I will have that look of pain on my face as well:)

Hey Michelle - Thanks again for the heads up. Didn't mean to trouble anyone! :) All fixed now though!

As for the strategizing an escape off a bridge, for some reason a Nike or New Balance commercial comes to mind. I could see the bridge start to collapse and you are keeping your cool, you just stride out a bit and as it starts to buckle you launch off the edge of the bridge and do a 20 foot free fall landing gracefully on your feet, do a little hop and then right back at it like nothing happened :) Almost as if you were planning for it all along. That's how the FRB runners roll. Plan ahead and always have a way out. I can't wait to see your race report on Saturday!!
