Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

50 minutes swimming with just arms in Lehi Legacy lap pool.  First time doing this in front of a swimming crowd, so that was a joy.  One length was typically 43 sec, and 43 strokes, and about 1.5 minutes back and forth which includes turn around time.  Right forearm started to hurt last 20 minutes but did better I think when I straightened my arm.  I liked when the old man was next to me and I could go faster than him.  I didn't like when a younger man started using that same lane and was smoking me.  I realized I need goggles if I am going to do this long term.  Stomach started to turn at around 40 minutes, perhaps due to the water I swallowed when trying to swim freestyle (only did three lengths, and those weren't even in a row, I am horrible at it).

Weight sucks.  Perhaps now that I am out of tax season I can do a morning and evening workout to try to keep weight down.

e-stim/heat on ham and SI area

ultrasound on ham and SI area

walk on treadmill 5 min

30 total gym squats three ways (even, left leg up, right leg up)

6:30 on tramp, 30 sec easy, 30 sec hard

1 min walk/ 1 min run on treadmill x5, then 3 minutes more walk (speed walking 4mph, running 7mph, focus on running on balls of feet, as Steve says, like Tinkerbell)

Massage on ham

Soreness in SI area at a 2 before, still a 2 as I go to bed.  Not pain, just can feel that there's still something there.

Diagnosis from Steve Orrock:  tendonotrophy (long term tendonitis) where ham meets sitting bone, so ham and other related muscles tighten up and pull downward on the sacrum or other pelvic bone? and makes my SI joint not have full range of motion or stability.  Says ham is primary issue causing SI issue.  Makes sense.

I think the head is the most weighty body part ... although it is sort of useful for finding your way around a race so I am not sure that would be the best one cut off.

Hamstrings are a bear Michelle. Dean is battling his as well.

Okay ... I totally need to learn how to swim. I tried while we were in California just in the pool at the resort ... I stink at it BIG TIME! Might take some lessons. The old man would have smoked me ... so feel GREAT about yourself.

You looked so GREAT when I saw you at Kelli's. I can't imagine you wanting to lose any weight.

So glad to read that your pain never increased. How do you feel today? What kind of things are you suppose to do for tendonotrophy? What is the expected healing time for that?

Michelle I will always be your number one fan. I just cheer you on off the blog and when your not in tax season and don't run on the days I want to run. I have cut back on my miles a little to see if my hamstring will feel any better. Desi is always using that excuse with me too. I tell him his bone structure was built to carry that much weight. Mine is not. I hope to get running with you sometime in the near future!

That's exactly what I had last winter - tendinitis where the hamstring inserts to the ischium. The good news is that the PT I did for it really helped (the bad news is that it took a few months). Just be patient and follow the program.

I went to Steve for 3 months after the Saint George Marathon. He really taught me some things that have helped. Use that great cage thing for stretching as long as you can. I wish I could buy one of those for home. But while I was injured those ham stretches/massages brought tears to my eyes and took 5 minutes to slowly bring my leg out of position. I hope all goes well in your recovery. It's such a bummer, but the hard core swimming is awesome.

Paul - I just reread 5 months of your blog regarding your injury. It seemed to move to your SI area at first, but then you just mentioned upper hamstring pain as you healed. Mine gets SI pain when I overdo it (never meaning to, it is so frustrating). So was yours mostly a hamstring issue? Not much in the SI area?

This one started as mild discomfort up near my bum, and then I completely blew it out for good two days after I first noticed it. Until then, I was doing fine on all counts. I tried to rehab it by myself for a couple months (the denial phase), and then started formal physical therapy on Jan 28th. of 2008. By mid-March, I ran the Moab 5M, which was good, but then my spondylitis reared it's ugly head, so I started having other non-running-related problems, like my feet, neck, and SI.

My SI joint pain is mainly related to ankylosing spondylitis. The upper hamstring pain I was experiencing up until a couple months ago turned out to be also be A.S., since once I started taking Enbrel it just vanished completely. A.S. can cause enthesitis, which is inflammation of the tendon insertion points. It may have been expressing itself for the first time with my winter, '07 injury that is like yours, but I do think mine was still mainly caused by running and fixed by PT.
