Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 8, 6, and 4.

scant 4 hours of sleep.

Woke at 3am, in car by 3:14, off to work.  Do some work then meet with Sasha and Jeff.  It was very dark on the trail and I felt like death (third night in a row of 4-4.5 hours of sleep will do that to you).  Felt better toward the end.  Nice to get back up to Provo and run with people who can talk running the whole run through without getting bored ;)  Running geek club!

I survived mini tax season!  Extended returns were due today.  I need to learn to not make it such a last minute scrunch.  Boy was this week stressful.  But it's done.  Phew!

Watched 1/2 of Run, Fat Boy, Run, a movie about a guy who decides to run a marathon in a desperate attempt to woo back his past fiance.  It is way funny.  Maybe can watch the rest tonight.

Shoe totals: Red sox: 57.25, Brooks Defyance (Blue): 478.76, Asics Stratus 2.1 (Purple) 147.06, Mizuno WaveRider (aqua) 144.18, Brooks Defyance-new (Blue): 22.82

From Adam RW on Oct 15, 2008 at 18:31:04

Ouch... about the sleep.

Looking forward to seeing that movie as well. I liked him in Shawn of the Dead.

From Jody on Oct 15, 2008 at 19:03:25

Nice job running on no sleep! I loved Run, Fat Boy, Run.. I want to see it again but even though he liked it I don't know if he will watch it again.

From JulieC on Oct 15, 2008 at 20:53:43

Is that movie available at Redbox? Also "The Spirit of the Marathon" I want to see. Have you seen it? I know what you felt like with the runs this past week. That is how I ran the SGM with insomnia for two weeks before. I was at mile 7 thinking I really think I could fall asleep now but I had to fight it and run 19 more miles. Sleeping alot better now. Good thing it is just an easy run day for you. Proud of you even getting out there. I skipped today. Although the day weather was very tempting.

From MichelleL on Oct 15, 2008 at 21:50:13

I got the movie from Netflix. It wasn't a big blockbuster so I would be surprised if it was on Redbox. I saw the spirit of the marathon in the theatres and I haven't seen it available on dvd but I would think it would be at some point.

From Jody on Oct 15, 2008 at 22:13:15

JulieC - It is at RedBox as well as on demand at Comcast. It is also available as a rental on itunes.

Way to go Michelle! I am glad you got today over with, what a relief. I hope you are able to get some more sleep in. You are awesome. Keep up the good work!

From kellies on Oct 16, 2008 at 00:50:41

PS. I meant relief getting today over with for the sake of the deadline on tax extensions. You deserve a little down time. I hope you get some. :)

I am totally impressed you got up and finished your run after falling down the other day. I love to read your workouts. You inspire me to run faster and harder.

That movie was great, we just watched it on cable from movies on demand. A little bit unrealistic but true in many ways.

From Sasha Pachev on Oct 16, 2008 at 11:35:00

What is the official rating of the movie, and are there any quotes or scenes that would fail the FRB censorship?

From Jody on Oct 16, 2008 at 11:42:41

Sasha it is PG13

From paul on Oct 16, 2008 at 11:56:01

Thanks for the movie tip Michelle, I added it to my Netflix queue. I loved Shaun of the Dead and also Hot Fuzz.

From MichelleL on Oct 16, 2008 at 12:09:15

Sasha - I have a clearplay dvd player so ratings are customizable in our home. You can clean up what you like out of it. However, I don't think the movie would be up your alley. It's not really about marathoning. It's about learning how to not give up.

As far as FRB censorship goes, I don't think there is a consensus of what that is. Family friendly is relative. Some families only watch G movies. Some families think X, Y and Z are curse words, while some families think Y and Z are curse words but X is fair play. I remember screaming a word i didn't think was a curse word at BYU to a guy I almost got when we were playing a huge outdoor tag game in front of the dorm mother. Some people informed me they though it was a curse word. I just thought it was a mean word (b*st#rd).

Yay for surviving October 15th!

Michelle - I decided I will try and like you even though you are a CPA..... (and you know what that stands for).

My ex hubby is a CPA - so I know how tough that life can be.

From JulieC on Oct 16, 2008 at 13:13:27

Hey Michelle I think I am going to comment often on your blog so I can get lots of mail. It was awesome to read tons of running blog comments just having commented on your blog. Hope you got some sleep. Going out to rent some movies later. Thanks for the takes.

From Sasha Pachev on Oct 16, 2008 at 13:38:57

We go by the most rigorous standards. If any dictionary marks a word "taboo" it fails the censorship unless used in a scriptural context. For example, "woe unto the liar for he shall be thrust down to hell". Also, a language can be desperately non-uplifting without one "taboo" word.

My take on the movies - I will not watch any that require a filter with or without one. Reasons - a) I refuse to drink a substance that is 99.99% orange juice and 0.01% arsenic. Once the arsenic is there, it does not easily go, even if you use a filter. The pollution is not in the word or in the scene, it is in the mindset of feeling the need to pollute. b) Even though my individual actions have little effect on the entertainment industry, I still believe in the power of one. If somebody purposefully pollutes the content, I want to make them suffer economically. Maybe to the extent of only $20 of lost sales. But it starts with one and multiplies. Eventually the entertainment industry would have to respond.

Having said that - Endurance about Gebrsellasie got a rating of PG-13. I did not realize it until I had watched it, and then had no clue why. Possibly because they showed the mourning at his mother's funeral? In any case, I always question the ratings. Sometimes a legitimate movie can get a non-G rating. However, in this case, knowing the nature of the plot and the general trend of the American entertainment industry, it is probably some vulgar or profane language.

From paul on Oct 16, 2008 at 14:00:32

even worse - the main actor is British!
