Run St. George 2008 in 2:50 or less, gauge whether an OT time is in my future.

Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 8, 6, and 4.

I felt horrible yesterday after my race (I felt fine for a couple of hours after, then it set in).  I have never felt so yucky.  I had constricted breathing, a headache and the runs and I didn't even notice the sore muscles.   

I woke up feeling better.  I ran nice and slow with Ali. My stomach still felt sensitive the first couple of miles with the inherent jostling that happens when running.  My breathing still didn't feel 100% and my legs are sore.  We stopped and stretched after a mile and that helped quite a bit.

Michelle, just read your report of the race yesterday - super impressive! Congratulations on a big PR!! You are an inspiration. I am concerned about your breathing problems though. Do you have asthma or anything related? Has it ever happened before after hard races? Stomach can get wrecked from hard downhill running, I often have issues with it from all the jostling, even without downhill.

I have had lots of races where I have gotten super sick about an hour after running. I would have the stomach cramping/naseau, the runs and throwing up. All I could do is curl up in a ball and moan and groan. 2 years ago coming home from Bryce they had to keep pulling over so I could puke on the side of the road. It always would last til about 8 or 9 at night.I think I figured it out for me and my salt/electrolytes were getting too low ( I was overhydrating). Its called hyponeutremia. I would look it up. I havent had a problem since SC half last november. But I am still always scared its going to happen after a race. Its such a fine balance!

Hi Michelle, I am sorry you did not feel well last night. I felt similar, with the headache and fatigue part. I have decided not to do any more races that start before 7AM ;-) (except maybe marathons).

Titus misses you, I think he did not get the message that you were not coming back because he brought you a celebratory mouse and deposited it on the front doorstep - I am sure it was meant as a prize for your awsome race. I did not know if you wanted me to save it for you, I assumed not and threw it out.

Maria - I don't have any diagnosed breathing problems. This is the first time I had some constriction after a race. I had some breathing constriction issues during tax season (perhaps on 3-5 runs during a 2 month period) but I think that was stress/sleep deprivation related. I feel normal today as the day progresses thankfully.

Marcie - I called Josse when I was feeling miserable yesterday and she suggested that issue, so I put about 1/4-1/2 tsp of sea salt on my tongue, eventually swallowing after it mostly dissolved, then eating 4 big pretzels as part of lunch. I'll have to read up on that condition.

Poor air quality could be the culprit :( I can see why the the air quality in China is such a big deal for the olympics.

I am so amazed at what you can do even when you aren't feeling well! You ROCK!!!
