Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Warmed up 6.2k nice and easy including two strides.

The course looked a bit hilly, and a lady I have talked with a couple of times indicated that in the past they had them run on the beach in the sand.

The first one k is uphill the first half then downhill the second half.  I wanted to take the uphill a bit aggressively, and did, was 3:46 pace at the top of the hill then slammed down, it was rolly but mostly down for the next k, sub 3:40 pace at this point, then at repulse bay they did have us run on the sand.  Incredible.  I hadn't run in sand since high school and I didn't push too hard, then up some stairs to get to the road and then it was rolling and up for the rest of the course until 500m to go.  I took heart from some cheering and passed two guys on the way back, tried to care all the way back though I was a bit mushy for some short stretches, I generally held it together and finished well.  17:52, but the course was short (4.84k per my watch, or 5:56 pace).  Not bad for a hilly course and about 150-200m of sand.   This was a series and I won each race so thus the series, but only won $800HKD in vouchers, which will buy me one overpriced pair of shoes (7.77 hkd is approx 1USD). 5k cool down.

AWESOME sauce!!! Congratulations on the win! I can just picture the course. I think I ran there when I visited Gary and Lily in 2006. WAY to represent! :)

Wow you know what I am talking about! How novel. It was a fun course, though not fast. I will do a fast 5k next week (it is on the track). I forgot to mention on the beach you can see a clock with the temperature and it was 28C and I thought, that is too hot! Where is the 23C we saw earlier this week???

Michelle, I'm friends with Smooth and Teena and the gang and have been following your blog. It is so great to read!! What took you to Hong Kong? Keep up the awesome work! :)

Hi Brooke! That's my youngest sister's name. Welcome to the blog of TMI in HK :D In fact, that might be a new blog title!

We moved here for a professorship position for my husband just over a year ago. I spent a lot of time with my baby jogger, but I found it harder to use in Utah than in Arizona (where my first two were born) because of the hills. Good for you for keeping at it and enjoying it. Running brings such peace and satisfaction in the baby years.

Good race Michelle. Gotta love sand, stairs and hot humid weather all in a 5k.

nice race. it sounded tough. i was complaining today about having to run across long wooden bridges and on a gravel path. i think sand takes the cake. your track 5k will be smokin!

Way to go champ! I think your Chinese computer needs to take a refresher course in English.

Why do you say that Burt? Because of my unimpressive words w friends performances?

From Burt on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 20:37:43 from 174.235.192.217

Well, that has been less than stellar lately, but that thing you said about being mushy. Why were you a bit mushy?

From MichelleL on Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 20:48:39 from 144.214.220.136

Like mushy in my resolve, as opposed to hard as steel. Mushy as peas.
